@September 4, 2024. The Author’s Writer
Has anyone ever told you that your story is “well written,” meaning that the grammar and spelling are impeccable?
That’s a nice way of telling you that your story is lacking.
Because stories are so much more than grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Rules are for editing.
Stories are for discovering.
A story resonates with readers on a subconscious level.
Which is why writers need to delve into their subconscious in order to write their stories.
This may be uncomfortable.
We may not like what we find. Like hidden emotions. Forgotten memories.
Yet it is this process of exploration which helps us tap into our creativity.
So, why do we confuse editing with writing?
In school, teachers often looked over our shoulders, walking up and down the rows of our desks, while we were writing.
We often received our papers back filled with red marks and comments.
After we graduated, we became our own editors, continuing the cycle of focusing on rules instead of creating and imagining.
Sadly, following the rules has robbed us of the discovery phase.
What are we discovering?
Our story.
Did you know that most writers do not know “exactly” what they are going to write “before” they write?
When we put pen to paper, we slow down. Ideas pop up. We make connections between what we observe and feel.
When we dive into our subconscious minds, we have the power to learn from them, and also to change them, if we want.
When we use AI to write, we are robbed of this process.
