Why Do You Want to Write a Book?
December 16, 2024Showing & Telling: An Intricate Balance

It’s January. A new year. A new beginning. A new look. A new book.
The thought of writing a book is inviting. After all, you have been thinking about your book for a long time. You know you need to write it. It can’t wait any longer. Can it?
So, now’s the time to get started. Right? To write when inspiration strikes. Can you leave it until tomorrow? Can you leave it until tonight? You can get started right now.
Here is one way to put paper to pen.
With a blank page before you, begin to ink the page. You can start by writing about what is on your mind at the moment. It may be your book. It may be your work. Your life. Friends. Family. Even errands you need to do. This is quite okay and freeing.
Write quickly. Step away from your conscious mind, especially the worries, the woes, the wonderings if you are writing it right or if it sounds good. Just focus on the ideas that flow from your heart. Your heart will lead you. It will answer the questions you have yet to ask yourself. This is called discovery.
Discovery in writing is fun and courageous. Discovery happens from the beginning until the end. A writer is always discovering. The writing is always discovering itself, too, as it changes, explores, and amplifies. It all starts with pen and paper and an idea. The rest belongs to discovery and our willingness to let our writing lead us where it desires.
